How to choose POS software for a shop in Ghana

Choose a point of sale system around the work your shop does every day: finding products, taking payments, issuing receipts and keeping stock accurate.

Start with one ordinary sale

Write down how a customer buys from your shop today. Can a cashier find the product quickly? Does the price match the shelf? How do you record cash, mobile money or a customer buying on credit? A useful POS should make this routine easier to follow.

Use your own products in a demonstration. Try a provision-shop basket with several items, a boutique item with a size or colour, or a hardware order with different quantities. A polished demo with sample products can hide the details that matter in your business.

Check products and stock together

Ask how opening quantities are entered and how a completed sale changes stock. Check whether categories, product search and barcodes suit the way your team finds items. If you have more than one location, ask which records are shared and which belong to a branch.

Test what happens when an item is running low or no longer available. Agree who can correct a quantity and how your team will check recorded stock against the shelf. Inventory is useful only when the starting figures and ongoing changes are accurate.

Try receipts on the devices you already use

Use the phone, tablet or computer that will sit at your counter. Create a receipt and check the text, totals and business details. If you use a thermal printer, confirm the supported connection and paper width with the provider before buying hardware.

Ask what happens if the internet connection drops during checkout. Offline capabilities vary between products and workflows. Test the exact behaviour rather than assuming a web-based POS can complete every action without a connection.

Review payments, access and cost

Recording a payment method and processing a payment are different capabilities. Ask which payment providers are supported, what fees apply and where you check settlements. Also decide which staff can change prices, issue refunds or see reports.

Compare the full cost: subscription, staff or branch limits, payment fees, printer hardware, setup and support. Before committing, complete a sale, inspect its receipt, check the resulting stock quantity and find the transaction in a report. Those four steps are a practical starting test.
