How to use this calculator
- 1
Choose one period, such as a month, and enter its fixed costs.
- 2
Enter a selling price and variable cost for one consistent unit.
- 3
Calculate the minimum whole units and the sales revenue at that target.
The formula, without the guesswork.
Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ (selling price per unit − variable cost per unit)
A worked example
With fixed costs of 1,000, a price of 50 and variable cost of 30, each unit contributes 20. Selling 50 units covers fixed costs, with revenue of 2,500.
U.S. Small Business Administration: break-even analysisA few things worth knowing
Why are the units rounded up?
You usually cannot sell part of an item. The calculator rounds the required units up so their contribution covers the fixed costs. Revenue uses that rounded whole-unit target.
What if my price is below variable cost?
Each sale would add a loss instead of contributing to fixed costs. The tool asks you to enter a price greater than variable cost rather than showing a misleading break-even target.
Can I use this for several products?
This simple model assumes one product or a consistent average unit, constant prices and constant per-unit variable costs. A changing product mix needs a more detailed analysis. Keep all fixed costs in the same period.
